For the most part, personal hygiene is something you learn at home. As a kid, your parents teach you, and as you learn, it becomes part of your daily routine. Every day, you take a shower, brush your teeth and wash your hands. However, not everything about personal hygiene is easy to talk about, especially during puberty.
A recent study found that 75.6% of their respondents groom their pubic hair. This comprised 85% of female respondents and 66% of male respondents. What is alarming, however, is that 25% of those that groom their pubic hair have also injured themselves in the process.
In this article, I’ll teach you how to shave your pubic area without injuring yourself, I’ll teach you why it’s important to groom your pubic area with high-quality equipment, and I’ll also guide you on how to find the best shaver for your pubic hair. I’ll even go over some of your burning questions about pubic shaving.
Grooming your pubic hair and pubic area doesn’t have to be intimidating or confusing. If you follow my guide and tips, eventually, this will be part of your routine just like any other hygiene habit.

Trimming Or Shaving — Which One Is Best For You?
You may have noticed me using the words “shaving” and “trimming” interchangeably, and for the most part, they are interchangeable since many razors can do both. But there are differences!
For the purpose of this guide, you should understand that the best shaver for the pubic area of a female is going to be a little different from the best pubic hair trimmer for a male, there’s no one size fits all, and different machines are going to be best for different people.
Regardless of whether you’re trimming or shaving, both of these involve cutting hair. The main difference is that while shaving gets rid of all the hair, trimming does not.
Shaving off all your pubic hair is a great option if you’re looking to get a cleaner, smoother look. Shaving is usually more difficult to do correctly, and it requires more consistent upkeep. You also run the risk of getting ingrown hairs and skin irritation.
Trimming, on the other hand, is a great option for giving your pubic hair more definition and shape. You can keep your pubic hair looking neat without running the same risks that shaving does.
Which one is best for you is really up to your preference. If you enjoy a clean-shaven pubic area and you can devote the time to do a clean, proper shave, then do that. If you prefer the look of a hairier but still well-groomed pubic area and want to spend less time grooming instead, then just trim.
10 Of The Best Pubic Hair Trimmers Review
I scoured the internet and tried out dozens of shavers & trimmers to make up this list. Keep in mind that the pubic hair trimmer won’t be universal. Some work much better for men, and others are better for women—there’s also the issue of budget and preference.
Philips Norelco Bodygroomer BG2040/49 Trimmer And Shaver
My first recommendation to you is the Philips Norelco Bodygroomer BG2040/49 Trimmer and Shaver. This machine has a very interesting design, sporting a shaver on one end and a trimmer on the other. The BG2040/49 is one of the most versatile trimmer/shaver combos, allowing you to use two specialized blades for two different purposes.
On the top of the BG2040/49, there is a foil shaver that uses oscillating blades in order to give you the closest shave possible. This sits on a 3D pivoting head, to allow you to freely move the shaver around difficult areas, including your pubic area.
On the other end of the BG2040/49, there is a trimmer that uses rounded blades to cut hair. This end features a built-in trimming comb with five adjustable length settings. You can trim down your hair to 11/25” or to as short as 1/8”. This is perfect for when you need to trim down your pubic hair before going for the full shave.
The BG2040/49 is very easy to use with its ergonomic design and grip that makes it very easy to hold onto. It is cordless, making it easy to bring anywhere. Additionally, it’s also water-resistant meaning you can use the shaver, both in and out of the shower. It’s perfect for use, regardless of whether you’re doing a dry shave or a wet shave.
Get Philips Norelco BG2040/49 at Amazon
When not in use, the BG2040/49 can be placed in its charger stand so that it can be ready to trim and shave at any time. Each charge takes only one hour and a full battery allows it to run for 50 minutes. The BG2040/49 features an LED indicator that will let you know when it’s fully charged, low on battery and successfully charging.
Before using the BG2040/49, be sure to plug it in and charge it for a full 24 hours. This will ensure that it runs smoothly and prevent any unwanted damage.
For maintenance, the BG2040/49 comes with a cleaning brush that allows you to remove any stuck hairs from the blades. Be sure to do this regularly to prevent any hair from jamming. Aside from this, the BG2040/49 has very durable blades, only needing replacement once every 6 to 12 months.
The only major downside to the BG2040/49 is that this is one of the older models on this list. Although despite coming from all the way back in 2012, this shaver/trimmer combo is still very difficult to beat.
Braun Silk-épil 9-890 SensoSmart Electric Shaver
Strictly speaking, this following recommendation is not a shaver. The Braun Silk-épil 9-890 SensoSmart Electric Shaver is an epilator. Instead of using blades to cut hair in the targeted area, the Silk-épil 9-890 comes with a specialized epilator head that catches onto the hair follicles and pulls them out like a pair of tweezers.
To ensure a close shave, the Silk-épil 9-890 features SensoSmart technology. It uses sensors to ensure that just the right amount of pressure is being used meaning that more hair can be easily removed at the same time. A red light will let you know if you’re pushing too hard, allowing you to easily adjust your grip as you move along the area.
The Silk-épil 9-890 can be used during a shower. It features a cordless, waterproof design so it can be used in the shower or even in the bath. It’s even recommended for use in a wet shave as this helps reduce the pain caused by the epilator.
The pivoting head allows you to move the epilator around easily around difficult areas while the smartlight makes it easy to spot potentially missed hair. These features are especially useful when shaving and trimming the pubic area as the area can be difficult to both reach and see around.
Get Braun Silk epil 9-890 at Amazon
You can fully charge the Silk-épil 9-890 in just an hour and a single charge allows you to use it for up to 40 minutes. When not in use, it can be stored in the included pouch alongside its charger and other attachments.
The Silk-épil 9-890 is great for all your hair shaving needs as it can be used to remove hair as short as half a millimeter instead of the usual 2mm of other epilators. Additionally, the Silk-épil 9-890 comes with a trimmer head that can be used to cut hair to length instead of shaving. It also comes with a facial cap, a skin contact cap, and a trimmer cap for varied lengths.
For more precise hair trimming, the Silk-épil 9-890 also comes with a separate body trimmer. This is best used for edge trimming and shaping your bikini line or the area around your pubic area.
A drawback to using the Silk-épil 9-890 is that since it’s an epilator, the process is much more painful than simply using a razor. Although there are no blades to cause microabrasions on your skin, epilating still pulls out individual hair follicles, similar to waxing.
Philips Norelco Oneblade QP6520/70 Pro Trimmer And Shaver
This next recommendation is another trimmer and shaver combo from Philips. The Philips Norelco Oneblade QP6520/70 Pro Trimmer and Shaver features a design just as ingenious as the BG2040/49. The Oneblade, true to its name, features a single blade that can be used as both a trimmer and a shaver.
The unique Oneblade technology of this trimmer/shaver combo essentially features a foil shaver. It uses a fast-moving, oscillating blade that moves 200 times per second. Together with its dual protection system, this allows the Oneblade to make close, efficient cuts without damaging your skin.
In order to use the trimmer function of the Oneblade, simply attach the included adjustable precision comb. This allows you to press the shaver against your groin while maintaining the right distance to get just the right trim. The comb features a dial for length settings. This allows you to set your hair length so you can get a shave as close as 0.4mm or as long as 100mm.
The head of the Oneblade has a flexible pivot so you can get around the contours of your body. Though not the most flexible shaver head, this feature will still let you reach most of the hair on your pubic area.
You can use the Oneblade for both dry and wet shaves, even with foam or shaving cream. It has a water-resistant design, making it good for use in any environment. This also makes it easy to clean as you can simply run the Oneblade under running water.
Get Oneblade QP6520/70 Pro at Amazon
When you’re done using the Oneblade, you can set it aside and put it on the included charging stand. An LED display will show you if it’s successfully charging as well as the battery level. This way, you’ll always know if your Oneblade is ready for a shave. It charges in just one hour and can last for 90 minutes on a single charge.
The Oneblade is also very durable, lasting about 4 months at a time at about 2 full shaves a week, or for a total of 32 full shaves. You can, however, easily purchase replacement Oneblade blades for when you need to finally replace the blade.
One thing to consider before buying the Oneblade is that though it boasts of being good at edge trimming, the size of the shaver essentially always stays the same. The surface area you’ll be using to shave is the same when you’re trimming. While you can use the guard to maintain some distance, the size of the blade makes it difficult to trim edges.
Clean Cut ES412 Shaver
My next recommendation is perfect for those looking for something that only offers the cleanest, smoothest shave. The Clean Cut ES412 Shaver guarantees just what its brand name implies, a clean cut. Unlike the previous options on this list, the Clean Cut ES412 is solely a shaver and does not come with any trimmer options.
The Clean Cut ES412 features a very simple design. It’s just a stainless steel cylinder that houses the battery and motor. The outer foil and inner blade then sits on top with a foil cover for protection. On the side, there’s a single button to turn it on and off.
The design of the Clean Cut ES412 has a very single-minded focus as this specifically labeled as a personal shaver or an intimate and sensitive area shaver. While other brands have several features, including trimming options, the Clean Cut ES412 is direct to the point and purposefully designed to shave armpits, underarms, and pubic areas.
The Clean Cut ES412 is a foil shaver. It features a very simple, but durable and long-lasting oscillating blade under a foil cover. The foil cover lets your hair pass through so that it can be cut by the blade. By moving the shaver around, you can easily cover your target area and shave the hair.
Should the foil shaver blade become dull, it can be easily removed and recycled. While durability can vary with use, the foil shaver can last anywhere between 6 months to 2 years. You can purchase a replacement blade (K30SP), so you can continue using the Clean Cut ES412.
Before using the Clean Cut ES412, be sure that you have already trimmed your hair either with scissors or another razor. The Clean Cut ES412 was only designed to handle and shave light stubble. Failing to trim longer hair can cause the hair to get stuck, potentially dulling or even breaking the blade.
You should also make sure to clean the foil using the included cleaning brush. The brush can be used to remove any unwanted hair from the holes in the foil. Failing to clean the blade and foil may result in a jam and your hair may get caught inside the blade. This can cause chafing and other skin irritations.
One of the main downsides of the Clean Cut ES412 is the fact that it requires one AA battery and it does not come with the packaging. Additionally, this means that the Clean Cut ES412 does not come with a charger and cannot be charged. This can be very inconvenient if you’re in the middle of a shave and run out of battery.
Panasonic ES2216PC Electric Shaver For Women
The Panasonic ES2216PC Electric Shaver For Women, as the name suggests is an electric shaver that’s specifically designed for women. It has a slim, curved and ergonomic profile as well as a soft grip that makes it easier to hold.
This shaver comes with four blades that work together to get the closest and fastest shave. Each blade is an ultra-sharp and ultra-thin foil shaver. This means that each pass through the targeted area will be more efficiently shaved compared with several other shavers that only feature a single blade.
Although four blades may seem intimidating, the ES2216PC’s blades are made with hypoallergenic stainless steel. The high-quality material ensures that despite having more blades, this shaver is still very gentle and will not trigger any skin irritation or other skin problems.
The ES2216PC also has a flexible pivoting head. This makes it easy to move the blades around natural curves and access difficult-to-reach spots. For women shaving their pubic area, this means you can adjust the blades to match that natural contour and shape of your body.
Beyond the flexible head, the ES2216PC is also flexible in that it can be used for dry and wet shaves. It features a waterproof design so you can even use this shaver in the shower!
Further adding to the ES2216PC’s flexibility is its pop-up trimmer and bikini attachment. This razor comes with a unique attachment that allows the oscillating blades of the foil shaver to act as a trimmer. The attachment guards you and your hair from direct contact with the blade. You can also adjust the length by moving the guard up and down, adjusting the distance to the blade.
The trimmer option of the ES2216PC is ideal for when your hair is longer and needs to be trimmed before shaving. Additionally, the trimmer can be used to shape the areas around your pubic or bikini area.
When not in use, the ES2216PC has a charging stand. Simply place the shaver on top of the stand and leave it overnight. This will ensure that the battery is fully charged and ready for your use the following day.
Before you buy the ES2216PC, make sure to consider the charging time required to use it. Although it’s still very lightweight, compact, and portable, the ES2216PC requires 12 hours of charging to fully charge. This may not be the most convenient charging time, especially if you’re traveling and are in need of a quick shave.
Philips Norelco Bodygroomer BG2034 Trimmer And Shaver
The next recommendation is yet another trimmer and shaver combo from Philips. The Philips Norelco Bodygroomer BG2034 Trimmer and Shaver is an impressive shaver that features an extra-long handle best designed for use on your back. This can also be used in other ways such as reaching other hard-to-reach areas, especially your pubic area.
The BG2034 features yet another foil shaver to offer the closest possible shave. It uses an oscillating blade to cut hairs that pass through a thin foil with holes for hair to pass through.
Despite the powerful motor and sharp blade powering the foil shaver, the BG2034 still manages to give you a gentle shave with minimal skin irritation. This is because of the hypo-allergenic stainless steel used to make the foil. The BG2034 also has pearl tips to help further reduce skin irritation.
In order to use the trimmer, simply place the included trimmer combs on top of the foil shaver. This allows you to keep a consistent distance between your groin and the foil shaver to ensure a smooth and consistent trim. The combs come in a variety of sizes so you can trim down to 3mm, 5mm, or 7mm.
The BG2034 is also perfect for use whether it’s a dry or wet shave. It has a waterproof design, making it a very versatile shaver that can do a variety of things in a variety of environments. This includes being used in the shower.
Beyond all this, the BG2034 truly shines when you’re using the extra-long handle to shave hard-to-reach areas like your back. Because it’s designed to be safe and gentle on areas it shaves, even if you make a mistake maneuvering the shaver, this will only result in minimal nicks and cuts.
After using the BG2034, make sure to place the shaver on its charging stand. Charging takes approximately 8 hours and the BG2034 last for 50 minutes on a single charge. The battery light indicator will show that the BG2034 is successfully charging and will warn you when the battery is full or running low.
Although it provides unparalleled maneuverability with its extra long handle, the BG2034 is not very flexible when it comes to trimmer lengths. With only 3 trimmer combs, it provides very few options for trimming, especially when compared with other shavers on this list.
Panasonic ES246AC Bikini Shaper And Trimmer
The Panasonic ES246AC Bikini Shaper And Trimmer is another recommended trimmer that is designed for women. This trimmer has a gentler shave and is very good at trimming hairs at an angle.
The ES246AC features a foil shaver arranged as a single set of teeth at the very tip of the trimmer. An oscillating blade moves back and forth in between the teeth, cutting the hair as you move the trimmer along the targeted area for shaving.
Compared with other foil shavers, this has a much smaller surface area. Although this may make shaving take longer as you shave less hair at a time, this design also allows the ES246AC to be more precise and easier to use for edge trimming and shaping the boundaries of your hair.
As the ES246AC’s blade is a bikini blade, it’s very good at shaping pubic hair. The blade comes in at an angle ensuring a good viewing angle when shaving the bikini or pubic area. This makes shaping hair a breeze.
To do a less close shave, or to trim, the ES246AC comes with a trimmer guard that goes on top of the foil shaver. The guard prevents the shaver from getting into direct contact with your skin, allowing you to cut at a farther distance. The trimmer guard comes with 5 settings. You can slide it up and down, locking it into place before use.
The ES246AC is designed to have a very gentle and comfortable shave. Starting with the blade itself, the smaller surface area means only a minimal surface of the trimmer ever touches your skin. Additionally, since the blade is made with hypoallergenic stainless steel, this also reduces any chances of skin irritation.
To further reduce the risk of skin irritation, you can use the ES246AC in the bathroom or in the shower. The ES246C has a waterproof head meaning it can be used for either a wet or dry shave. Wet shaves ensure a closer shave without sacrificing your skin’s health.
When you’re done using the ES246AC, make sure to take the included cleaning brush to ensure that all hair has been cleared out from in between the blades and attachments of the trimmer. This will ensure that your trimmer is always running at peak condition.
One thing to consider before buying the ES246C is that it runs on two AA batteries instead of on an internal, rechargeable battery. This may be a concern as it would be very inconvenient if you unexpectedly run out of battery mid-shave.
Philips Norelco Bodygroomer BG1026/60 Trimmer And Shaver
My next recommendation also comes from Philips. The Philips Norelco Bodygroomer BG1026/60 Trimmer And Shaver is one of the most lightweight and portable trimmers on the market. It has a thin profile that makes it easy to hold and use, similar to a disposable razor.
The BG1026/60 comes with two sets of foil shavers on either side of the shaving head. This bi-directional trimmer makes it very easy and comfortable to use. Whether you’re trimming with or against the grain, this trimmer is able to take full advantage of its multidirectional design and give you a clean shave with every swipe.
Despite being a very simple, no-frills trimmer, the BG1026/60 still offers up some features to protect your skin. The foil shavers on either side have integrated skin protectors that guard your skin. Although this affects the closeness of the shave, the BG1026/60 still shaves very well, and is able to cut hair down to half a millimeter.
If you want to have a shave that isn’t as close as half a millimeter, the BG1026/60 comes with a single trimmer comb that will allow you to cut hair down to 3mm instead. The comb is very easy to use and just needs to be placed on top of the shaving head and it’s ready to go.
The BG1026/60 is not only showerproof and waterproof, but it’s ultimately designed to be used in the shower. It uses disposable batteries and does not require charging. It even comes with a shower cord so it can be hung and stored inside the shower for easy access during showers.
The BG1026/60 is simply one of the most portable trimmers and shavers on this list. It’s lightweight, compact, and it can even be easily hung and stowed away. You don’t need to bring a charger or a charger stand, and it only has one attachment.
Some downsides are that it isn’t the most versatile trimmer as it only offers two length settings — a close shave, or a 3mm shave. Additionally, it’s only battery-operated, meaning it can run out of juice before you’re done using it. This can lead to an awkward half-trimmed pubic area.
Philips Norelco Bodygroomer BT5215/41 Trimmer And Shaver
This next recommendation is the Philips Norelco Bodygroomer BT5215/41 Trimmer and Shaver. This is a beard, head and body trimmer that comes with a ton of accessories! This trimmer excels in precise trimming and shaping.
The BT215/41 sports a single set of teeth at the tip of the shaving head. This is a foil shaver, and an oscillating blade moves through these teeth to cut your hair. This shaver is also positioned at an angle. This ensures that you can see the hair as you cut and trim around it.
The pouch that comes with the BT215/41 is not just for storing the trimmer itself. Instead, the pouch is designed to hold the different attachments for the body, face, and head. These attachments have special shapes that allow the trimmer to contour around your genitals.
When you’re done using the BT215/41, you can plug it in and charge it using the included charger. If you forget to plug in the charger, the BT215/41 can be used corded and plugged into the wall.
You should also be sure to use the included brush to clean the BT215/41. This is to ensure that no hair gets stuck in between the blades. Additionally, this prevents old hair from irritating your skin when you use it again.
The BT215/41 might seem a little overwhelming for most people. Although it will allow you to experiment with a variety of different hair lengths. The downside of the versatility of the BT215/41 is that you may not need all the options.
Gillette Fusion ProGlide 3-in-1 Razor Styler Special Pack
This final recommendation comes from a collaboration between Gillette and Braun. The Gillette Fusion ProGlide 3-in-1 Razor Styler Special Pack lets you trim with a Braun trimmer and then get a closer shave with the sharpest Gillette blade cartridges.
For the electric trimmer, the Gillette Styler features a foil shaver engineered by Braun. This uses an oscillating blade that cuts hair as it passes through the holes on the foil cover.
When trimming longer hair, you can use the interchangeable trimmer combs and place them on top of the electric trimmer. These come at a variety of lengths (2mm, 4mm, 6mm) and cannot be used concurrently with the Gillette Fusion razor.
Although the foil shaver already lets you get a very close shave by itself, to get an even cleaner shave, you can use the Gillette Fusion cartridge that sits on top of the Braun shaver. When the Gillette Fusion blade is in place, the Braun shaver is knocked out of place to prevent any accidental operation of the shaver.
The shaving blade functions the same as any other Gillette Fusion blades. It comprises 5 blades that ensure an extremely smooth shave. Additionally, it features Flexball technology, allowing the blade to move from side to side. This makes it easier to shave around curves and the natural contour of the shaved area.
The Gillette Styler does not use a charger and instead relies on AA batteries for its operation. A battery comes with the packaging, and a typical battery is expected to last 4 to 6 weeks. Although you might worry that the battery will run out during use, since it also comes with a manual non-battery-powered razor, battery is not as big a concern.
One of the main concerns with buying a Gillette Styler is that the Gillette Fusion cartridges require more frequent replacement compared with electric shavers. Although Gillette boasts that their blades can handle 5 to 10 shaves before becoming dull, this is dependent on the frequency and type of use. For some, they may need to replace the blade every 3 to 4 shaves instead.
What Should You Consider When Choosing A Pubic Hair Trimmer?
Now that we’ve gone over some of the best pubic hair trimmers on the market, let’s discuss some of the things you should look for in a good pubic hair trimmer.
What makes a pubic hair trimmer the right fit for you will ultimately be reliant on how you plan to use it. Each one comes with different features that will help get you the best results.
-
The Sharpness Of The Blade
One of the first things you’ll want to consider when choosing a pubic hair trimmer is how sharp it is. This directly impacts the quality of the trimmer as you generally want your trimmer to be sharp enough to cut your hair.
If you’re using a dull blade, there’s a higher risk of getting a cut. Instead of cutting your hair, the blade will drag it along and tug at your skin, causing a cut and skin irritation.
-
The Type Of Blade That It Uses
Another factor to consider is whether the trimmer has a foil or rotary blade head. A foil blade head is typically rectangular, with several oscillating blades running back and forth to cut your hair. Trimmers with these types of blade heads offer a closer shave, but are less flexible and more difficult to use around curves.
On the opposite end, there are rotary blade heads that have spinning discs with blades that rotate to cut your hair. These are easier to curve around the shape of your pubic area but offer a less close shave.
-
The Versatility And The Accessories
In order to serve a variety of needs, many trimmers and shavers come with several attachments. These attachments can range from different-sized blades, to specialized equipment like nose hair trimmer attachments, to blade guards at different lengths.
Attachments allow a lot of pubic hair trimmers to have long lists of features. This can easily be overwhelming, but versatility is more than just a long list. Be sure to cross-reference the list of features on the product with the list of features you need. Make sure that the trimmer you choose is versatile to suit your needs and not just for versatile for the sake of it.
-
The Portability And Ease Of Travel
If you’re traveling a lot, this will be a very important point to consider. Trimmers can either be corded or cordless. Corded trimmers are basically the same type of trimmer you would normally see at a barber shop. These are generally more powerful trimmers that are still very light and easy to handle, but sadly they aren’t very portable.
Cordless trimmers, on the other hand, come with a charger and need to be charged every now and then. These generally aren’t as powerful as they need to allocate for a battery instead of a larger motor. Being cordless, these are much more portable.
-
The Battery Life And Charging Capabilities
Battery is another point to consider when getting a trimmer. Especially for cordless trimmers, batteries ensure that you’re able to use the trimmer whenever and wherever you need to use it.
The size of the battery will also affect a trimmer’s portability. While a smaller battery will make it lighter and easy to handle, it also means that the trimmer won’t stay charged for long. This will require you to bring along the charger, making it more difficult to carry. A larger battery on the other hand will last longer, but will be heavier overall.
-
The Durability And The Build Of The Machine
As with all electronic equipment and tools that you buy, it’s important that your trimmer is durable. Trimming is not a heavy duty activity, so it’s reasonable for customers to expect that the trimmer lasts a long time.
When buying a trimmer, make sure to check the warranty to see how long the manufacturer expects you to use a trimmer before they it starts breaking down. Try to opt for a machine with a longer warranty period as this is a guarantee given by the company itself.
Why Should You Shave Your Pubic Hair?
There are a myriad of reasons why someone would shave their pubic hair. Some people have aesthetic reasons. Some have comfort reasons. Some people shave their pubic hair just to follow the trend. Here are some common reasons why you might want to shave your pubic hair.
-
You’ll Be More Comfortable
One of the most common reasons people shave their pubic hair is really just about comfort. Although this may come down to personal preference, a lot of people claim that having a shaved or trimmed pubic area is more comfortable than when they have a full bush.
For people who have really long pubic hair, they find a shaved pubic area more comfortable because there’s less risk of hair getting stuck in things like zippers. It’s also a cleaner, crisper feeling.
-
You And Your Significant Other Will Love It
Another reason people like to shave their pubic hair is because of the preference of their partner. For many people, shaving or trimming their pubic hair can be a great way to add some spice to their sex lives. Some couples figure out how to shave together. Some partners might even shave for the first time as a surprise for the other. For some couples, it’s simply expected for hygiene reasons.
-
You’ll Be More Hygienic
Pubic hair is coarse, curly, and rough. Hair is really good at catching and collecting things. All that oil and sweat you generate throughout the day? That all gets collected by your pubic hair, and that’s much harder to clean than just your skin.
-
You’ll Be More Attractive
If you’re looking for a new look, shaving your pubic hair can be a great way to change things up. A shaved pubic area can look cleaner, or conversely, more defined. A lot of women shave their pubes because it helps define their womanly curves. And a lot of men believe that shaving their pubes helps their junk look bigger and manlier.
-
You’ll Have Better Sex
A shaved pubic area helps both partners feel everything that’s going on during sex. Suddenly the sensation of your full genital area coming into contact with your partner is much more prominent! A shaved or trimmed pubic area also helps with oral sex, as most sexual partners would prefer not to get a mouthful of hair when going downtown.
-
You’ll Have Less Skin Irritation
A shaved pubic area means less friction. If you’ve got a bush down there, everyday activities like putting on your underwear or pants can cause your pubic area to itch and subsequently irritate your skin. A shaved pubic area makes everything more comfortable down there, and it makes it easier for you to apply any ointment or lotion to any affected spots or irritations.
How Do You Trim And Shave Your Pubic Area?
So how do you actually go about trimming and shaving your pubic area? To avoid injury, make sure to follow my step-by-step guide below. This will ensure that you’re always safe and taking the necessary precautions to prevent any injury.
Step 1: Find A Safe And Comfortable Place
Before you do anything, make sure you find a proper location for trimming and shaving your pubic area. Try not to choose a public or shared space, and if you do, make sure to lock the door. This will be a very private process and you wouldn’t want anybody to intrude.
This will likely be inside your bathroom or bedroom. Make sure you have enough space to move around and access tough-to-reach spots. Being able to face a mirror will also make this process easier. As soon as you think you’re set, you can move on to the next step.
Step 2: Gather All Essential Tools
Make sure to gather everything you need so you can start and end this process with minimal distractions. The most important tool for this will of course be your trimmer. If you have long pubes, make sure you also get a pair of safety scissors so you can trim before shaving.
You will also need to wash and moisturize your pubic area, so be sure to bring along any products you will need to prepare your pubic area prior to the actual shaving.
Step 3: Clean All Your Tools
Once you’ve gathered up all your tools, make sure that you’ve cleaned all of them. Also, make sure that all of the mess from their last use has been cleaned out.
Having clean tools ensures that you lessen the risk of any and all infections. Clean tools run more efficiently and are less likely to catch onto hair and cause cuts and unnecessary abrasions. This will also prevent rust from forming, ensuring the durability of your tools.
Step 4: Wash Your Pubic Area
Moving on from cleaning your tools, make sure to also wash your pubic area. Thoroughly wash the entire pubic area with soap and water. Be sure that you get in between the hairs, so you can wash the skin directly.
Washing your pubic area ensures that it is clean and has as little unwanted bacteria as possible. This will not only make it easier to trim and shave, but it will also prevent infections.
Step 5: Trim Long Hair
Before you use your trimmer, make sure that you trim your pubic hair down shorter than half an inch, or shorter than a centimeter. This will ensure that your trimmer doesn’t jam when cutting your hair. If your hair is too long, the hair may get caught and cause skin irritation.
To trim long hair, you can use a pair of safety scissors. Make sure to do it evenly. Trimming large areas will result in uneven hair that’s difficult to groom.
Step 6: Exfoliate The Pubic Area
Exfoliating your pubic area is meant to help soften the skin and prepare it for shaving. To exfoliate, you can use a product like an exfoliating scrub or cream, or a tool like a loofah or brush.
When you exfoliate, you eliminate the top layer of dead skin cells, making your skin smooth and soft, so it’s easier to shave.
Step 7: Apply Shaving Cream (Optional)
If you prefer a wet shave, your next step is to apply shaving cream. A wet shave leads to a closer shave with an exfoliating effect on the skin. However, doing a wet shave also means a higher chance of cuts and razor burn.
There is also the issue of many electric trimmers not being able to handle a wet shave. For some trimmers, the shaving cream gets behind the blades and destroy the motor. Be sure that your trimmer can handle shaving cream before proceeding.
Step 8: Shave With The Grain
Finally, after taking all the preparatory steps, you can take your trimmer and shave your pubic area. Make sure to shave with the grain (i.e. shave in the same direction that the hair is growing). This will reduce the risk of nicks and cuts while maintaining a close shave.
To make sure you get all the spots, be sure to use a mirror and check if you were able to cut all the hair in the area.
Step 9: Take A Shower
After shaving your pubic area, make sure to take a shower or wash your pubic area again with soap and water. This will ensure that all the hair is washed away.
Additionally, if you use hot water, this will help soften your skin and reduce any potential inflammation or irritation.
Step 10: Apply Skin Care Products
After taking a shower, you can take further care of your pubic area by applying whatever skin care products you feel are necessary. Moisturizer will ensure that any microabrasions caused by shaving won’t cause damage to your skin. Topical creams can also be applied to prevent or counteract any swelling or inflammation.
You can also use oils or exfoliating scrubs to help treat the area after a shave. Whatever skin products you use, make sure to apply evenly for the best effect.
Step 11: Wash Your Tools
Once you’re done shaving and washing yourself up, you can then proceed to wash your tools. Depending on your trimmer, it will have several detachable parts that you can clean. Most trimmers aren’t fully waterproof, so be sure to not include any electronic parts when washing your trimmer.
For whatever tools you’ll be washing, make sure to wash them thoroughly with soap and water and then wipe them down. This will prevent them from rusting and ensure durability. You can also apply some oil to ensure that they’re in working order.
How Else Can You Groom Your Pubic Area?
Before you go shaving your pubic area, you might be asking if there are alternatives to using a trimmer or shaver. The following list breaks down your potential alternatives as well as why you may or may not choose to use these instead.
-
Waxing
One of the most popular alternatives to shaving is waxing. This involves the use of hot wax poured onto the targeted area. The wax is then allowed to cool and cling to the hair. Then, the wax is pulled off the skin, taking the entire hair follicle, including the root, with it.
Compared with shaving, waxing generally needs less upkeep as it takes out the root along with the hair follicle. However, as it involves pulling out a lot of hair simultaneously, the process can be very painful and difficult to bear. Additionally, it carries the same risk of ingrown hairs as shaving.
-
Epilating
Epilators are specially designed machines that mimic the use of several tweezers to pull out a mass of individual hair follicles at the same time.
Compared with waxing, epilating has more of a tendency to cause hairs to break off, meaning hair will grow back faster. Additionally, like with waxing and shaving, epilating also carries the risk of ingrown hairs.
-
Laser Hair Removal
As far as alternatives go, laser hair removal is one of the more permanent options on this list. This method requires the use of a laser directed at a large area of hair. The laser blasts away at the melanin in the hair causing the hair to grow back lighter and thinner.
The main downside of this hair removal method is that it’s also the most expensive method on this list. Additionally, although it’s meant to be permanent, there are cases where the hair is not killed in the process, and it still grows back.
-
Sugar Waxing
This hair removal method is not just an alternative to shaving and trimming, but an alternative to waxing as well. Unlike regular waxing, sugar waxing uses a natural sugaring paste made of lemon, water and sugar. This paste then clings to the hair and pulls it out at the root.
Compared with regular waxing, it only removes the hair and doesn’t affect the skin underneath. Additionally, since it only uses natural materials, it’s hypoallergenic and has less risk of skin irritation.
-
Threading
Threading is a hair removal method that uses two intertwined threads to wrap around hair follicles and pulling on them to remove hair. This method is capable of removing the tiniest of hairs, even those that have just started growing back. It’s great for fine details and shaping patches of hair such as eyebrows.
The problem with threading is that it’s much more suited to precise hair removal than bulk hair removal. For large patches of hair, such as your pubic area, threading will take too long.
-
Depilating
This alternative involves the use of depilatory creams in order to remove hair. This method uses chemicals to break down the hair. You simply apply the cream to the area you want to remove hair from, and after a few minutes, depending on the product, you can wipe the cream and the hair away.
This is one of the easiest ways for people to remove unwanted hair, since it only involves two steps. However, because it does use some strong chemicals, the cream may end up irritating or burning your skin. Additionally, for pubic hair removal, this may not be ideal as the area involved is very close to the genitals, which can be easily damaged by depilatory creams.
