Long hair looks very beautiful no matter what type of hair you have. It’s a matter of jealousy and awe for everyone else. But long hair needs a lot of care. You can’t go lazy with it.
In many cases, we aren’t enough to manage it ourselves and need the help of others. That is why we invest so much in its care and always give it the best of hair products. This applies to curling irons as well.
More often than not curling irons can’t deal with such a huge amount of hair and expire before they should. Then, there is the matter of hair types as well.
I must be honest with you! Even though several curling irons do well with multiple hair types, they don’t provide enough for the overall volume of hair.
I bought and threw away many haircare tools because they just couldn’t survive the ordeal of working with my long, thick hair. It is better not to exert a device that uses heat, or it might cause you harm.
That is why it is very important to find the right products, even if that means spending some extra time and money. Luckily for you, I have already spent that extra bit and prepared a list of the best curling irons for long hair.
I’ve packed in a buying guide and a few tips as well. This is just to help people in doing the job properly.

Some of the Top Curling Irons for Long Hair – My Recommendations
If you are here, half of your work is already done. Check the list of top 10 curling irons that I’ve selected from my years of experience. I have even taken feedbacks from my friends who are professional hairstylists and they have all been happy with these products.
You’re free to choose the curling iron that fulfills all your needs from the list. Surely, your everyday hair styling experience will become better than ever.
The T3 Twirling Trio is among the best clamp-style curling irons. This is not to say, there is no particular difference in efficiency between irons with and without clamps. It is mainly a matter of personal preference (for me, at least).
This T3 curling iron comes with three interchangeable barrels. Their sizes are 1 inch, 1.25 inches, and 1.5 inches respectively. The smallest one gives you tight ringlets and the medium one gives you defined curls.
I’m more interested in the third and the biggest one. It’s great for natural curls and beachy waves. You can get creative and try out various other hairstyles.
All three of the barrels are actually very easy to attach and detach. T3 uses a locking mechanism similar to camera lenses and so you can easily secure the barrels in place. You can buy barrels of other sizes which T3 sells separately.
The T3 guys have equipped this curling iron with an internal microchip. This makes sure the barrels provide even temperature throughout the length of their bodies.
The chip can measure and maintain a consistent temperature that delivers fast and uniform curling results with no risk of any heat damage.
I noticed 5 heat settings altogether from 260-degree Fahrenheit to 410-degree Fahrenheit. If you didn’t know already, different hair thicknesses require different levels of heat.
For example, the thinner your hair, lesser the heat it will need, and vice versa. In other words, this curling iron is suitable for all hair textures.
Let’s get to the barrels now. These are designed with custom blend ceramic materials.
Ceramic, as you should already know, is one of the most effective and safest hair styling materials. It further helps with evenly distributing heat reducing chances of heat damage.
Moreover, ceramic emits negative ions. These are the real deal. The ions seal the hair cuticles which help with a number of things.
The moisture remains locked in, the hair strands become smooth and frizz-free, and lastly, the curls become polished and well-formed. Your hair will become healthier and shinier.
No curling iron is complete if it’s not convenient to use and safe at the same time.
The T3 Twirl comes with 9 feet long, 360-degree swivel cord. It’s durable and gives you all the space you need.
One can carry this product anywhere in the world as it can work with different voltage outputs. He/She may need an adaptor depending on the power outlet.
The iron has a cool tip and stands that help to protect you and the counter from unwanted heat burns. On top of that, it features a 1 hour shut off mechanism. Thus, there is no risk of accidents if you were to forget to switch it off.
The BaBylissPRO curling iron offers us fast and effective results with zero chances of causing heat damage. However, this is not the only reason that helped it get onto my list. Let’s explore them one by one.
This product uses the improved Nano Titanium Technology that can take care of our hair while styling it. Nano Titanium Technology can emit far-infrared heat which is very gentle and enter the core of the hair strands.
That is, your hair gets heated from within and in the most efficient manner. The heat is distributed evenly along the barrels without forming any hot spots.
BaBylissPRO has been able to bring out all the goodness of Titanium and Ceramic with its use of Sol-Gel Technology. It transforms them into nanoscale particles producing a comparatively higher and more consistent concentration of ions.
The ions will make your hair shinier, smoother, and healthier than before. You will enjoy perfectly formed curls and beachy waves in much lesser time. In fact, your hair will become safer from further damage.
Keep in mind that Titanium-based curling irons work faster, and that is why it is more suitable for people with thicker hair.
You can still use this curling iron for fine and thin hair. It offers a minimum temperature of 220-degree Fahrenheit and a maximum of 430 degrees.
There is a total of 50 heat settings within this range, and you can select one depending on your hair type.
It also features a Turbo heat button that provides an instant boost in heat output for faster and more defined results.
BaBylissPRO has made sure you can do a variety of hairstyles with a single product. Barrels of three different types are included with the product all of which are easy to lock and unlock.
The first one is a 1-inch spring barrel and can give you tight ringlets. Then there is a bubble wand whose size is 1.25 to 1.75 inches. This is great for adding volume and spiral curls to your hair. The third one is a 1.5-inch barrel fitted with heat resistant combs. This will help you with many more styles.
This BaBylissPRO comes in different barrel dimensions, each suitable for a particular type of curl size. Buy the one that suits your hair curling needs.
This also comes with a swivel cord that is 8 feet long and a heat resistant glove for added safety. However, it doesn’t feature an auto shut off mechanism and operates on a single voltage output which is 110V. It can’t be used outside the USA.
If you are looking for a clamp free option, the Paul Mitchell Pro Tools is what you need. The biggest benefit of curling irons like this is that it lets your hair get in direct contact with the heat source. It’s efficient in its work and will hardly ever leave you unsatisfied.
The Paul Mitchell Pro Tools is designed with Express Ion Technology which is very helpful for people with long hair. It works gently and uniformly on all hair types. It can heat your hair faster from the inside out.
The heating process actually makes sure your hair is safe from heat damage and split ends. In fact, the Express Ion Technology makes your locks healthier by hydrating the curls and smoothing them.
As a result, you get to enjoy shinier curls that hold their shape for a very long time.
Moreover, the barrels/cones use ceramic in the making. It is a natural component that is equally friendly to your hair and the environment. This why I think it is the best curling iron for long hair for ladies (and gents).
It comes with 9 feet long, durable cord. You will not feel restricted and can work on your hair freely. This curling iron can be a traveling partner as it operates on dual voltage.
It also features a “One Hour” auto shut off feature to make sure there are no accidents when you forget to switch it off.
You have to place the iron close to your head and wrap a section of hair from its base to the tips. If you want more waves, you got to wrap over the iron. Or if you want more lift and bouncy curls, just wrap your hair under the iron.
This curling iron comes with three interchangeable ceramic barrels. The smallest one is a 0.75-inch cone that is best suited for tight ringlets.
The medium one is a 1-inch cone/rod that will give you perfect beachy waves. The widest one is 1.25 inch and it does wonders in forming natural curls. You can switch up and create your own style.
This curling iron offers temperature options from 160-degree Fahrenheit to 410-degree Fahrenheit. If you have thick and coarse hair, you can easily go for higher temperatures. The lowest setting is more suitable for people with thin and fragile skull furniture.
The great thing is, the Paul Mitchell curling iron can reach the highest temperature in a very short time.
Thus, you don’t have to spend a lot of time waiting for it to get ready. There is a digital display which will make it easy to choose the right adjustments.
The Sultra the Bombshell Rod curling iron is another clamp free product in this list. I would recommend this iron for people who have colored hair or dry and damaged hair.
This Bombshell will make sure that your hair is protected and safe from further damage.
Sultra has provided the users with two complimentary items along with the curling iron which is a styling glove and an iron pad. They help quite a lot when working with your hair and then storing the product.
The Sultra the Bombshell curling iron will give you luxurious curls that last a long time. It is very easy to use and actually does the job in much lesser time than regular clamp curling irons.
It offers a constant temperature of 395-degree Fahrenheit. The iron can reach that max temperature rapidly and then recover it just as fast as you begin working with it.
Just hold the iron close to your head and then wrap a portion of your hair around it. It will take only 8 seconds to form perfectly defined curls.
Remember to hold the lock of hair in your hand until it cools down. Once cooled, the curls will hold their shape for a long time.
Sultra has enhanced this rod curling iron with Advanced Care Ceramic Technology. It emits essential negative ions and near-infrared heat. You know the drill by now, don’t you?
Together, they help to heat your hair gently and uniformly. The ions seal the cuticles making your hair stronger and shinier.
In fact, this curling iron will help to repair and protect our hair from any future damage. As a result, we get our desired hairstyle and advanced protection at the same time.
It has 9 feet, tangle-free, and swiveling cord which makes it very convenient to work around your head. You will not feel tied down. You can also carry it when traveling internationally as it operates on universal voltage.
The Bombshell rod curling iron is rather conveniently equipped with an “Auto Shutoff” safety feature. It will get automatically turned off if we don’t do anything with it for 30 minutes or so. There will be no risk of unwanted accidents.
I should mention that this curling iron only offers a single heat setting which, as I mentioned earlier, is 395-degree Fahrenheit. The iron provides this temperature in a consistent manner and that is why it’s so effective for thick and coarse hair.
However, for this same reason, this product is NOT suitable for hair that is naturally fragile and thin. If you have hair like this, you will need a much lower temperature to safely work on your hair.
The Hot Tools Signature Series Gold curling iron is probably the most stylistic product in this list. It has a beautiful gold barrel and clamp, and an ergonomically build handle. It will feel comfortable in your hand while you give yourself gorgeous curls.
This 24K gold curling iron is not just about its looks. Hot Tools have used Gold Technology to give you faster and longer-lasting results. The unique styling surface is paired with a high-quality conductor that can emit and distribute heat evenly. Your hair will remain safe from heat damage.
The Hot Tools gold iron/wand has a rheostat control dial with which you can easily set the right temperature. This product offers multiple heat settings ranging from 280-degree Fahrenheit to 430-degree Fahrenheit.
If you have never used a curling iron before, or if you have thinner hair texture, you should always start from a low temperature to get things kicking.
This product is actually suitable for all hair types and textures. You will always get a consistent result, be your hair long or short, thick or thin.
I liked the fact that the iron gets fully heated in just 30 seconds. The “On” indicator light will show you which mode the iron is currently set on.
This particular model comes with a 1.25-inch barrel which is optimum for almost all kinds of curly/wavy hairstyles. Other sizes are available too; you should get the one that’s suitable for the style you are aiming for.
Curling iron from Hot Tools is one of the few products which come with a separate “On/Off” switch.
While it’s not such a big game-changer, I find it quite convenient. I don’t always like my curling iron to start heating the moment I turn it on.
However, when it DOES get hot it stays hot. That is, this gold curling iron/wand is equipped with Pulse Technology that can quickly detect temperature drops. The smart sensors will shift the temperature and restore it straight away.
The only unfortunate thing about this otherwise gorgeous curling iron is that it does not offer dual voltage support. So, you can’t carry it outside the USA.
You also can’t be careless with this curling iron. It does not have an auto-shutoff feature. You must remember to switch it off and pull the plug out after you have done using the product.
The unavailability of this feature may seem like a bummer, but you should always be cautious when using electrical devices of any kind.
This is altogether a convenient product. It has a 6 feet swivel cord which is of professional quality and a fold-away safety stand. You can easily use and store it.
The BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Prima is the only product in this list that can straighten and curl – do both. This is a very efficiently made product that will not cease to amaze you. It is built with high-quality materials and offers higher quality services.
You might be wondering how can a hair iron do both. Well, if you look at the product you will notice its bifurcated design. By opening the prongs, the Prima works like flat iron, and when you lock the prongs you can use it as a curling iron/wand.
BaBylissPRO has used some of the most durable and effective materials in building this product. The housing is made of Corvex SUS304 Stainless Steel.
Thus, it is very lightweight but warp-resistant. It also doesn’t get corroded and will easily go a long way.
To effectively straighten the furniture atop our skulls (we’re still discussing hair), a device needs to have perfectly aligned plates.
This product actually has 8-Point floating plates that offer flawless alignment and styling tension. These plates are made of aircraft-grade titanium and so they are doubtlessly proficient at their job.
When used the right heat setting, you will get the desired results in just one or two passes. There a total of 5 heat settings with colored light indicators.
The lower two are suitable for thin and fragile hair. The middle one is suited for normal textured hair. The last two settings go very well with thick and coarse hair.
It doesn’t matter what kind of hair we have; you can always enjoy smooth, shiny, and perfect hair in a matter of seconds. It is easy to hold due to the finger rests on both sides. The 8 feet long cord allows you to move the iron around effortlessly.
However, it only operates on a single voltage which is 110V and so you can’t use it outside the country.
BaBylissPRO didn’t stop at titanium. They also included high density dual ceramic heating system. Ceramic is renowned for its uniform and gentle heat transfer. In this product, it can do that job 20% faster due to its high density.
In fact, this curling iron has Ion Multiplier Technology that can emit twice as many ions. This altogether higher level of functionality makes it the top curling iron for long hair.
BaBylissPRO offers a total of four sizes for this exceptional product. The size of the barrel determines what kind of curl you will get. So, first, decide the hairstyle you want to have and then get the size appropriate for it.
The CHI Spin N Curl Ceramic Rotating Curler makes curling your hair effortless and easy. I know some people are worried about automated devices.
Rest assured, you will not face any difficulty with this product. This is a very safe and secure curling iron.
For well-defined curls, you should use small sections of hair in each turn. If you want loose curls or waves, use a larger section. There are Left and Right buttons with which you can select the direction in which you want your curls to form.
Bring the curling iron close to your head, introduces a section of hair, and then press any of the direction buttons. The curler will tell you when the hair is ready and then you can simply release the lock of hair.
If your hair does get tangled, the Spin N Curl curler will start beeping immediately and you will see Reset flashing on the display.
Simply press the power button and the curler will shut off. After that, slowly pull out the strand. Press and hold the power button to shut the beeping sound, and start over.
The curling iron has a “Completely” insulated body. Only the inner curling chamber gets heated. You can work with it without worrying about burning your hand or face.
The curling chamber is made with Ceramic Heat Technology. It can produce far-infrared heat and evenly distribute it over your hair. This helps to reduce heat damage and split ends.
Moreover, the negative ions emitted from the ceramic makes your hair shiny and smooth by closing the cuticles. It also reduces frizz and makes your hair healthy in the long run.
I must mention that while the CHI Spin N Curl is very good for long hair, it’s not that good for shorter ones. You should at least have shoulder length hair to effectively use this product.
Make sure to clean the curling chamber from time to time. Maintenance IS needed after all. The makers didn’t forget it either.
A barrel cleaner is included with the product which works very well. You can work with gel applied hair which tends to leave residues on the barrel but you can easily clean it later on.
The CHI Spin N Curl offers heat settings suitable for all kinds of locks we have. The preset temperature options are L 370 F for fine and thin hair, M 390 F for normal hair, and H 410 F for thick and coarse variants.
I think, for thin and fragile hairs, a much lower temperature is more suitable. One can check the selected heat settings on the digital display. The display is surprisingly detailed in my opinion.
It also has a 9 feet long cord and can operate on dual voltage. It is convenient and travel-friendly.
The Kiss Products Instawave is an automatic curling iron that you can use with ease and comfort.
It has been intelligently designed to reduce any chances of tangling. In fact, it doesn’t use a curl chamber and instead uses the traditional barrel for the job.
The barrel is made with a Patented Curl Dial that has prongs or ridges at the base. These act as combs to keep the hair smooth and tangle-free. This in turn makes curling your long hair more efficient and convenient.
The Kiss Products Instawave can rotate both left and right. You can switch up your style or give variations to your curls.
This will also help you get a “Symmetrical” look in the front, and alternating patterns throughout. Changing the direction of your curls actually gives your hair a sense of motion and natural flow.
The 1-inch barrel itself is made of high-quality Ceramic Technology.
There is no doubt in Ceramics manifold benefits when it comes to styling your hair. It can smooth out the cuticles and help seal the moisture.
This protects the hair from damage, makes it soft but strong, and of course, shiny. Moreover, Ceramic helps to highly reduce frizz and static.
We get two options when meddling with the temperature. The lowest is around 200-degree Fahrenheit and suitable for thin and fragile hair.
The highest is 420 degrees with which you can work with the thickest hair textures. However, it would have been better if the Instawave offered an option between these two.
This curling iron is called InstaWave. This is probably because it works so fast.
I can vouch for the fact that it gets heated quickly. The power light turns blue when it’s ready for use. You can curl each section of your hair in just 2 seconds. This will save a lot of time for those who have long hair.
It is also safe and convenient for use. The barrel is the only part that gets heated and has insulated tips. The handle is easy to hold and doesn’t get hot at all.
You will not need to use any heat resistant gloves. The Instawave has an auto-shutoff feature that switches off the device after 90 minutes.
The 5 feet cord is durable and offers 360-degree rotation. You can comfortably move around the curling iron for best results. However, it only operates on 110V and so you can’t use it outside the States.
The InfinitiPro by Conair Curl Secret is another one of the automatic curling irons in this list. This is a safe and time-saving way to get the beautiful curls you have been dreaming about.
Let me tell you: It’s suitable for all hair types, and as long as you have at least chin-length hair this will give you exceptional results.
When I first saw the InfinitiPro, I was a bit skeptical about its motor. As it turns out, Conair has used a brushless motor which is a professional-grade and has a long life. A motor like this one doesn’t lag or produce any conflict.
This thing can run smoothly all the time and so there’s basically zero chance of it to malfunction.
Along with that, Conair has also included a Safety Sensor. It will let you know the moment there’s any tangling inside the curl chamber. The sensor stops the curling iron and lets you easily free your hair.
The high-quality heaters are efficient and work fast. They take only 30 seconds to fully heat up and while it does that the red light will keep blinking. Once the light becomes solid, it’s ready for business.
I might sound salesy saying this but The Tourmaline Ceramic Technology will make your hair soft and smooth by closing the cuticles.
This will also make the hair static and frizz-free. In the end, you will get to enjoy beautiful, shiny, and healthy curls.
Remember to always place the opening of the curl chamber toward your head.
Insert a small section of your hair and close the handles. The chamber will automatically draw it in. You should use sections smaller than an inch if you have hair beyond a certain length.
Remember not to use wet hair when working with curling irons.
The only issue with this design of curling irons is that the curl chamber can get dirty. However, Conair provides an easy-twist barrel cleaner with which you can keep the chamber clean effortlessly.
It offers two heat settings and as many as three timer options.
Normally, I’d not be happy with just two choices for setting the temperature as it will not be good for all hair types. But when paired with the 3 timer options which are 8, 10, and 12 seconds… it works really well be that thin or thick hair.
It works fast, saves time, and forms perfect curls. It also has a 6 feet long cord which lets you comfortably move around the iron. It shuts off on its own when not being used to save energy and reduce chances of mishaps.
Do you love glamorous beachy waves and curls? I can see you saying “Yes.” In that case, the Alure Three Barrel Curling Iron Wand is the thing for you (frankly, me too).
This product may look heavy, but it’s actually lightweight and very convenient to use. It’s got soft, non-slip handle and 360-degree rotatable tangle-free cord. One can work with comfort and ease.
All three of the 1-inch barrels are lined with Ceramic and have insulated tips. I’m not surprised to be honest.
It is suitable for long and short, thick and thin hair. In fact, no matter the hair types… the Alure curling iron wand will give it volume and make it appear fuller. Plus, there will be no risk of burning your face or hands.
The Ceramic adds shine and health to your hair. It seals the cuticles and locks in all the good moisture. This in turn makes the hair free from static and unwanted frizzes.
The beachy waves and curls will last for a whole day. You can use a heat protectant spray before styling and a texturizing spray afterward for added safety and sustainability.
In my experience, beachy waves are normally harder to form and the process is also time-consuming. But the Alure curling iron changed it all.
The unique three-barrel design makes it a lot easier and time saving. That is why the iron can also reduce energy consumption in the long run.
There are multiple heat settings, the highest being 410-degree Fahrenheit. There is an LCD display on which you can easily see the set temperature. You can even see when the curling iron wand has reached that temperature.
The Alure curling iron can reach the highest temperature in less than a minute. Once heated, the curling tool will give you results in seconds.
Depending on your hair type, it may take from 5 to 15 seconds to form your desired curls and waves.
Make no mistake! This Allure Wand’s use is not limited to beachy waves and curls only. You can also crimp your hair with this product. Most curling irons can’t be used for crimping, but Alure is ahead of them all.
In fact, due to its unique design, crimping your hair will become so much easier. I have heard of people who bought this product solely for the purpose of hair crimping. It will take you around 10-15 seconds to get lasting crimps.
This can also be your travel buddy when you go on vacations overseas. The Alure curling iron wand operates on dual voltage support and so can be used safely outside the USA.
Buying The Top Quality Curling Irons For Long Hair
It is not that difficult to find curling irons for our hairs even if they’re a bit (to put it mildly) lengthy. The difficulty arises when we want to check up if it’s best for our hair or not. I’m here to help you guys out.
Let me give you some pointers that will help the users in choosing the tool best fitting their needs. Ready? Take notes!
Get a Fix on Your Hair type
Before you buy any type of hair product (be that shampoo or curling iron), you need to know about your hair first. Your hair will be the key deciding factor. This hugely applies to “Curling Irons” because they use heat.
Thin, fragile hair requires lower levels of heat. On the other hand, thick and coarse hair requires higher.
Thus, if a curling iron provides only 400-degree Fahrenheit heat, you can’t use it on thin hair. You should always choose one that offers varying levels of heat, as it will help with styling as well.
Moreover, hair length plays a big role too. Longer hair means more work for a curling iron. So, you have to choose the most durable ones or it will be a total waste of money.
Type of curls
Only some of the top curling irons for long hair provide all kinds of curls and waves. Most of them are great for curls only, while the rest are good for beachy waves.
If you want to do only one type of curl or wave, you can easily opt for an iron that can do that. If you don’t have anything particular in mind, you should get those which will let you do both curls and waves.
It’s not that we can’t get beachy waves from a curling iron that is not meant for it. But the process will be difficult and time-consuming. The results may not always be that satisfying either. This is me speaking from my experience.
Take a Look at the Barrel (or Barrels)
The barrel is, without a doubt, the most important part of a hair curling machines. It has to be of the best quality, or it’s no good. There are two things to consider regarding barrels – their size and material.
The size of the barrel is related to the curls it will produce. Smaller barrels, 1 inch or less, make tighter curls and ringlets. Those larger than that help with loose curls and natural curls.
Barrels bigger than 1.5 inches are made for beachy waves and voluminous curls.
Depending on your choice of hairstyle, you can get a product with fixed barrel size. Or, the way I like it… you can buy a curling iron that offers interchangeable barrels of different sizes.
If it’s the latter, you need to make sure that the barrels can be easily attached or detached.
Then comes the material of the barrel. Regardless of your hair type and length, you should get curling irons with any one of these core heating materials:
Ceramic is a very common barrel material and it has been in use for many years. It is made from clay and so it can emit very gentle far-infrared heat. This type of heat can get heat the hair from the inside which is a very safe method.
The negative ions emitted by Ceramic help to seal the cuticles and make it shiny and healthy. Moreover, ceramic is well suited for all hair types, especially the thinner ones.
Tourmaline is a crystal-like material that is normally ground and infused into the ceramic. It enhances all the existing benefits of ceramic.
Together… they make your hair healthier, shinier, and stronger. In fact, tourmaline ions make hair softer which then produces much better curls.
Titanium is another material now used in some of the top curling irons for long hairs. Its benefits are somewhat the same as the previous two but to a much greater extent. Titanium can also provide gentle heat but it’s stronger.
Thus, it works faster than most materials.
That is why it is not suitable for fragile/damaged hair. With thicker hair, it will provide much more shine and well-defined curls that last longer.
Gold is now also becoming popular in the hair curling business. The most impressive side of this material is that it can tolerate high amounts of heat for a long time.
Thus, if you have very thick hair you should get curling irons with gold plated barrels.
Have a Look at the Design of the Tool(s)
The basic designs of curling irons are with clamps and without clamps. Now, there are some which have curling chambers running on motors.
If you are choosing from the first two types, it’s mostly going to be about your personal preference. The curling results are the same, only the process is a bit different owing to the difference in its structure.
If you are a beginner, you should get the ones with clamps.
For the third type, there is an issue of your hair getting tangled. Now, the best quality auto curling irons have taken a lot of care to reduce the chances for this to happen. So, if you want to get an automatic one you should not choose a cheap product.
You should also make sure the motors are brushless as they don’t lag or produce any friction at all.
Heat and Timer Options
Most curling irons provide at least two options for heat output – low and high. The high is normally around 400-degree Fahrenheit which is needed for curling thicker hair.
The lower limit varies; sometimes it’s at 260-degree Fahrenheit and sometimes it’s higher than that. There are many which offer three options.
If you have thinner hair, you will need a curling iron that can provide around 260 degrees. Higher heat than that can damage your hair. Nevertheless, I think it’s always better and safer to get curling irons that offer varying levels of heat output. With multiple options, you can switch up styles easily.
As a beginner, you should get curling iron for long hair that has timer options.
You can set one based on your hair and curl type and the iron will do the rest. It will tell you when the hair is done so that you can release it. If you are not feeling confident, always start from a lower temperature and lesser timer option.
Keep the Safety Options in Mind
I can’t stress enough about how important safety is when it comes to using electrical devices. The curling iron should have a well-built housing and durable cord and plug.
You should also make sure the power outlet is in good condition. Never use a curling iron while standing on or around wet surfaces.
Many curling irons come with auto shut off features which switch off the device after a certain amount of time. But that doesn’t mean you should get careless and leave the iron unattended.
Comfort Should be Prioritized as Well
You need to be able to use the curling with comfort. That is why the iron must have a cord that is at least 5-7 feet long, durable, and lightweight.
Most curling irons are provided with swivel cords that don’t get tangled. Some even have cords that rotate a full 360 degrees.
In fact, the whole product should be lightweight and ergonomically built. This means that the handles should be easy to hold and have a comfortable grip. You don’t want your hand to get tired from simply holding the machine.
Nowadays manufacturers are taking the button placement into consideration as well. They are conveniently positioned and so you can press them easily.
The Tool you Use Should Be Travel friendly
The new and improved curling irons all have a slender build that can be easily packed with your luggage. The main thing here is that if it can be used everywhere or not.
Of course, all of the curling irons listed here can be used anywhere inside the USA. They all operate on 110V and so you will not face any problem plugging them into your home power outlet.
Among these some can provide dual voltage support, that is, they run on both 110V and 220V. So, they can be used in countries other than the USA.
You can take them along with you when traveling internationally. However, make sure the power outlets are compatible with the plugs of the curling iron. If they are not, use a suitable adaptor.
How to Curl Long Hair in the Right Way
The first thing you need for perfectly curling long hair is suitable for curling iron. If you don’t use the right equipment, you will never get the best results. So, once you have the right product, you have to decide on a curling style.
Basically, there are three types of curling – waves, loose curls, and tight curls.
You can easily get the last two with a single curling iron, but many of them are not made for making beachy waves.
Unless you want a particular type of curl, make sure the curling iron can offer more than just one way of hairstyling.
Before you use any type of heat-based hair styling device, you should always wash and then completely dry your hair. You can use a heat protectant spray as well.
If you have a waver curling iron, you are already halfway done. Simply follow the steps for that device and you will get those beautiful waves. You can also use a regular curling iron for making waves.
At first, section your hair in one inch or smaller proportions. Take a section at a 90-degree angle and place the barrel behind it.
Then, wrap it flat around the barrel but don’t twist the hair around it. Leave the last two or three inches to get that signature unruly beach look. Beachy waves don’t need much heat, so holding it for a few seconds is enough.
Loose curls or voluminous curls require a slightly similar process. But this time, you have to fully wrap the hair flat around the barrel. It is better if you use a larger sized barrel as that will help form the best loose curls.
You will have to keep the hair wrapped longer than before. When the hair is ready, slowly release it and hold it in your hand until it cools down.
Let the hair fall down when cooled. Follow the same process for the rest of your hair and you will soon rock the red carpet like loose curls.
Now, for the tight curls. When you have long hair, you can opt for either a small barrel or a large one. Smaller barrels should give better ringlets, while larger ones will be giving tighter curls.
Whatever the style or barrel size, you will need to twist your hair before wrapping it around the curling iron. You can also braid your hair, which will result in a slightly different style.
The main thing to remember here is to follow the same direction of curling throughout the whole process. Tight curls also require more heat and time to form, so don’t get impatient. With top-quality curling irons, you will still be able to save a lot of time.
Tips for Curling Long Hair
There are a few things which if you keep in mind… will always help you get the best curling results. Let’s go over them briefly.
- First of all, don’t get too fussy about how the curls look. To me, the best hairstyles are those which look natural unless the occasion asks for something particular.
- If you try to make all the curls look the same, you will probably have to spend the whole day and still not feel happy with the results. Go whimsical from time to time and get a look that goes with you.
- Alternate the curls’ directions, change styles or do something that has never been done before.
- Whatever you do, you must always give your hair’s protection the topmost priority. Heat based hair styling devices can always damage your hair if you get careless with it. Most curling irons are already safe to a great extent. But it’s safer to use heat protectant spray which will definitely protect your hair and keep it strong. In fact, a good quality spray will also help in the curling process.
- Some people even use hair sprays (probable link up when products are available) before curling their hair as it can help to get long-lasting curls. I have got mixed results from this. But you should try it and see if it works for you.
- Detangling your hair before curling is important as well. Especially, when you are aiming for beachy waves. It also helps in evenly distributing the heat intake and keeping the hair free from unwanted mess.
- The size of the barrels decides how the curls will be. So, for beachy waves and loose curls, use a larger barrel. For tight curls and ringlets, use a smaller one.
- Beachy waves and loose curls take less time to form, but tight curls take longer. So, if your curling iron doesn’t have a preset timer, you should make sure to give your hair enough time to get heated properly. Otherwise, not only will the results be unsatisfactory but they also will not last that long.
- Another tip for getting beautiful loose curls is moving the iron away from your face as you curl. It will give your hair a fuller look, no matter if you have thinner or thicker hair.
Mistakes You Should Avoid While Curling Long Hair
If you are new to curling your long hair, you can make some common mistakes. While none of them will damage your hair, they will definitely hamper your curling process and the outcome.
- No matter how you want to curl your hair, you always have to divide your hair into sections. With shorter hair, the sections can be 1 inch or larger. But you shouldn’t do the same with long hair. Longer hair means more work for the curling iron in each time of use.
- If you use sections larger than 1 inch, your hair will not get enough heat and so the curls will not form properly. That is why the sections should always be smaller than an inch so that all the hair strands get the right amount of heat.
- Before you use any hair product, you should know about your hair. You shouldn’t just use a product unless it suits your hair. So, first, you should get curling irons that can deal with long hair. Then you should use the right settings.
- With longer hair, it will always take more time and heat even if it’s thin and fragile. However, you shouldn’t just directly go for the highest settings. If you’re using these tools for the first time, you should test the results starting from the lower levels and then slowly moving higher if necessary. Using the right heat settings and time is very important in getting the best curling results for long hair.
- Curling irons require maintenance. You shouldn’t keep using one for months without ever cleaning it once. This applies greatly to the automated curling irons which have an inner chamber. These always come with cleaners with which you can easily clean the chambers. You should clean the iron once or twice every week depending on how frequently you use. If you haven’t used it for a long time, you should clean it first and then use it.
- You shouldn’t be careless about safety. Curling irons are electrical devices that operate while staying connected to a power source. So, firstly you should make sure the power source is working properly and it has the voltage output needed for the iron to work properly. You should always check the iron, especially the cord and the plug for any kind of damage.
- You shouldn’t use the curling iron in the bathroom or anywhere wet. If the iron accidentally falls on a wet surface or into the water, don’t rush to pick it up. First, unplug the device and then safely pick it up. If you think that water has gone into the inner parts, make sure to dry it completely before testing it.
How To Make The Curls For Long Hair Last Longer
Now that you have done all this, it’d be a shame if the curls didn’t last long enough. Well, here are some tips to make those beautiful curls for your long hair last longer.
- You need to prep your hair beforehand, and that doesn’t mean just the heat protectant spray. Using the right kind of shampoo can make a big difference in the final results. I suggest skipping the conditioner. From what I have learnt and experienced, slightly oily hair makes better curls. For this reason, some people curl their hair a day or two after shampooing. Don’t forget to use a heat protectant spray.
- Well prepared hair will amount to nothing if the curling iron isn’t good enough. That is why you need to buy only the top curling irons for long hair.
- The way you curl, plays a big role in the overall process. Try to go as close to the roots as you can without touching the scalp.
- Allowing the curls to fully cool down is also very important. You can cool each of the curls by holding it in your hand. Or you can clip them in place while you work on the other sections of the hair. If you want to brush your curled hair, you should do it after it has fully cooled down. Otherwise, it will lose its shape.
- You must have noticed that the curls tend to get a bit bigger than how they looked right after coming off the barrels. If this bothers you, you can make the curls tighter than you actually want them to be. In this way, when they will stretch later on, they will get the shape you wanted in the first place.
- Some people use hair spray before curling, some afterward. To me, it doesn’t matter much as long as I am using it. Another product that you should invest in is a texturizing spray. This spray helps a great deal in holding the shape of the curls. Moreover, it gives your hair volume and texture. Remember to use the sprays a bit far from your hair.
- Finally, don’t touch your hair. Now, we all like to play with our curls – I’m guilty too. But touching your hair a lot can loosen the curls. Thus, try to do it as little as you can.
Let’s Put This Discussion to an End
When I was a kid, I saw ladies spending hours upon hours in the salon for getting their locks curled. The process was seemed so bothersome that I thought of never doing it myself.
Thankfully, we now have products that not only bring the salon to our home but also are easier and faster to work with.
People can pick any of these Curling Iron for Long hair candidates from the list. However, I’d very much like to recommend anything from BabylissPro or CHI Iron. Kiss Products also put up a decent fight.
As far as researching your own products go, the buying guide will suffice. You’ll find the tips, do’s, and don’ts to be useful as well. Do let me know how the curling experience turns out to be for you in the comments.
